Old Foundation Hike in South Bradford State Forest

  • 07 Feb 2015
  • 11:00 AM
  • Bradford, NY - Stueben County

European settlement of this area began around 1793, and agricultural abandonment occurred relatively early (1910-1929) on the hilltop lands now occupied by this state forest. The 1903 US Geological Survey map shows over a dozen structures here, and due to the early abandonment and lack of redevelopment it is possible to find the foundations of many of these structures. A walk along an old road (part of it is still open to vehicles) will take us past seven or more of these sites. I will share the techniques I use while looking for old foundations, and help the hike participants rediscover them.

South Bradford State Forest is located eight miles southeast of Bath. Please RSVP for details on meeting location (I’ll need to plan parking locations and possible shuttle options based on participants). The initial hike will take 1.5 to 2 hours and involves modest elevation changes. For anyone interested, there is an option afterward to hike off the road to an additional foundation, and search for another foundation that has eluded me.

Note: Winter is a great time to search out old foundations since a lot of the masking vegetation has died off, but if there is more than 4 or 5 inches of snow this will become a hike and I’ll reschedule the foundation tour.
