HIKE MT MONADNOCK WITHOUT THE CROWDS, ON XMAS MORNING SAT 2010
7AM carpool from metro west, or meet at trailhead for 9AM start. We'll hike the Cliff trail which flanks the mountain on it's southwestern ridge, complete with rock/ice scrambles, great views (if clear), and the open rocky summit approach from the south. Winter gear is required on this hike, as is prior winter experience. Warm clothing and boots, spare clothing, emergency gear, plenty of food and liquids, crampons, and ice axe may be needed.
This is a 6.5+ mile hike with over 1500 feet of gain, with an option to extend the descent on another lesser used trail which leads back to the same trailhead. A solid hike in it's own right due to it's steep rocky sections, and exposure on top, Monadnock, at 3165' is the highest stand-alone mountain in the area, towering 1500 - 2000' above the surrounding area, making for high wind conditions on the summit, especially in winter. Be prepared for a cold, beautiful, varied climb. For more info contact leader at boston@womenoutdoors.org.
