The Wesley Hill Nature Preserve has its roots in a land purchase made by three artists in 1926, with the preserve being established in 1999 thanks to the efforts of the Finger Lakes Land Trust and the artists' heirs. The preserve has about 8 miles of trail but we'll do a loop of about 3 miles, visiting the old artist's cabin and the overlook along the way. The loop will take us through old and new forests, an old red pine plantation, and old field land succumbing to scrubland. Hunting is prohibited the weekend that we'll be hiking, and it's likely we'll only see a few other people out in this hidden gem.
RSVP and Cancellations
Please respect the trip leader and update your RSVP if you sign-up but then are unable to attend. If you attend without RSVP-ing it is possible that the hike may have changed without notification.
Trail Conditions
Much of the trail is wide and flat. Patches of mud, depending on the recent weather. Wooded trail along the gully rim is narrower and leaf covered - a walking stick makes the going more secure. There are some ups and downs, though not too intense. I would classify this as easy to medium difficulty.
What to Bring
Dress for the weather and a hiking stick is recommended. Bring water and a snack if desired.
Location and Directions
For detailed directions from your location use the address and your gps or an online mapping program (6060-6280 Gulick Rd, Naples, NY 14512). For Google map directions go to http://www.fllt.org/preserves/wesley-hill-nature-preserve/ , scroll to the map at the bottom, and click the balloon.
The gravel parking lot is on the west side of the road and has a small kiosk. The parking lot is below the road and easy to miss. It is between Wesley Rd to the north and Parks Rd to the south.
Note: If you look at a map you'll see that Wesley Rd goes up to the preserve from East Lake Rd, but be forewarned that end is seasonal and well rutted (but fun to drive if you have the appropriate vehicle!).
Onsite Facilities
There are no facilities onsite, and no nearby businesses. Honeoye is probably the last sign of public businesses to the north, and Naples to the south. If you use TP in the outdoor facilities make sure to bring a zip lock baggie so you can carry it out (TP is so gross to find in the woods).
