Like the idea of a First Day hike, but not the idea of hiking with a huge group at one of the NY state sponsored events? Come out and hike with me on New Year's day instead!
We'll hike a 2 hour loop on the Finger Lakes Trail, visiting an old cemetery and homestead sites. Most of this section is in hardwood forest so we'll see some winter views not visible when the leaves are on
Current forecast calls for mild weather between now and the New Year. You can expect mud. We won't know about rain until we get closer to the date.
There is a clean porta potty at the park and a covered picnic area. I'll bring a grill and something to cook for everyone, and we can share lunch after the hike.
What to bring
- Sturdy boots or shoes that can handle mud and wet conditions. You may want to bring an extra pair of shoes for your drive home (and a plastic bag for your muddy shoes).
- Clothes for the weather. Layers are best. Rain gear if needed.
- Hiking poles if you have them - useful in the mud
- Gaiters if you have them - keep your pants dry and mud-free
- A good attitude - no complaining about mud and rain :-)
- A heavier coat/puffy and/or a blanket and sit pad for after the hike.
