Skytop is a 10.8-mile loop trail near Syracuse. We will only be hiking between 3-4 miles. It’s a forested area surrounding an old quarry. It has many trails meandering through the woods. The trails are primarily used for hiking, nature trips (that’s us) and mountain biking. I have hiked it twice and have only seen a couple of bikers on the trail. It’s a gem of a place so close to the city. The trails are rated moderate. We are in the woods, therefore there will be rocks, roots, muddy spots, some small inclines and descends. There are various types of trees, bushes and spring flowers. At some point along the trail we can descend into the quarry and walk along the abandoned buildings and other structures still standing.
What to bring: good hiking/walking shoes, hiking poles, bug spray, hat, water, snack and anything else you feel is necessary.
Where to meet: in parking lot behind Mod Bldg #3. From E Colvin Street turn into Skytop Rd, which is across from Lampe Athletic Complex. Go approx. .5 miles on Skytop Rd and turn right on the road between the three story SU Human Resource building and a modular building. Go left and park somewhere behind modular building #3. This road is right before a gate, which is usually locked at the end of Skytop Rd.
