An Introduction to Open-Water Swimming
COMING TO YOU ON ZOOM
Did you know that there are fresh-water jellyfish? That a 150-pound person will burn roughly 400 calories during an hour-long swim at a moderate pace, and 700 at a vigorous one? That if you're swimming in cold water, hypothermia can come on 15 minutes after you've come out, toweled down, put on dry clothes, and gotten into a heated car?
Open-water swimming experts Daniela Klaz and Sam Levinson know all that, and far more. They've both clocked hundreds of miles in marathon swimming events. They'll be sharing their fascinating stories and advice on three-season, open-water swimming, or what they call "water-based, self-propelled freedom." They'll also share their wisdom on cold-water swimming and acclimation, open-water kayaking for swimmers, and open-water safety. Their goal: to entice people to try open-water swimming—safely.
Swimming is a glorious way to explore the outdoors in a completely different way than the land-based activities we usually do, be it hiking or biking or even our near-the-water-but-not-actually-in-it favorite, kayaking. Please join us as we explore this aspect of enjoying the outdoors in a way that many of us may know little about—you're sure to learn something about safely exploring the aquatic world around us!
Note: This event is open to all levels of experience, including beginners.
