Meander the Swamp Boardwalk
Huntley Meadows is a beautiful swamp with a boardwalk running through it. Migration should be in full swing, so we'll start fairly early. We'll take an easy walk through the woods to the boardwalk. We hope to see a variety of spring birds, plus frogs, turtles, snakes, and even a muskrat. Beavers are possible but less often seen. Dogs are forbidden on the boardwalk.
We'll meet at Huntley Meadows - Main Entrance and Visitor's Center. This is a prime birding location and quite popular. Parking is somewhat limited, so we recommend carpooling if possible. The Center and its bathrooms are closed on Tuesdays, but there are portable bathrooms in the parking lot.
The total walk is just under two miles and will be at an easy meandering pace with lots of birdwatching stops on the boardwalk. We will have at least one spotting scope available.
There is a $2 parking fee (honor system). It IS possible to park BEFORE paying the fee. Please bring exact change to avoid complications making change.
Registration closes on Monday, May 6th or when we reach 12 participants, whichever comes first. This activity will be cancelled in the event of thunderstorms but will proceed in a light rain; all registrants will be notified. Dress accordingly. The boardwalk is exposed to full sun, so hats are recommended.
This free activity is open to members and non-members of Women Outdoors. Non-members are welcome to attend two WO events as guests. On your third event, we'll ask you to join the Mid-Atlantic Region of Women Outdoors. You can also join right now by clicking on this Join Us link.
