Canoeing and Kayaking the Kingfisher Trail

  • 12 Sep 2009
  • 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM
  • Bladensburg Waterfront Park, Bladensburg, MD

Registration

  • An unexpectedly lovely trip on the Anacostia River. We'll put in at Bladensburg Waterfront Park, explore Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, paddle past the National Arboretum and then head back.

Registration is closed
We'll meet at Bladensburg Waterfront Park for a gentle paddle along the Anacostia River.  This diamond in the rough of a waterway will surprise you for its abundance of wildlife.  Kingfishers, snowy egrets, green herons and great blue herons all call the Anacostia home.  We'll paddle into Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens to see both the cultivated, historic water gardens as well as the wild wetlands.  The tide will be coming in while we're paddling, so we should be able to explore many of the gardens.

Kayaks and canoes are available to rent from Bladensburg Waterfront Park for $6/hour or $15/day.  (For Prince George's County residents, rental fees are $5/hour or $12/day.)  All women must wear a PFD.

We'll meet at 10:00 a.m. to allow plenty of time for everyone to rent their kayaks and then we'll review basic strokes and safety procedures.  If you're bringing your own boat, we plan to launch around 10:45 a.m.

We'll snack while we're on the water, but bring a picnic lunch for afterward.

This free event is open to members and non-members of Women Outdoors Mid-Atlantic.  Non-members are invited to join us on two events before we ask you to join Women Outdoors.

Please register no later than 12:00 p.m. Friday, September 11.  Thanks.
