Exploring Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
in Outdoor Spaces"
with Lily Otu from the American Canoe Association
COMING TO YOU ON ZOOM
Note: Zoom Meeting Details will be sent with your confirmation email
The Women Outdoors Diversity Committee is proud to invite WOOF speaker, Lily Otu, to share some of her inspiring experiences about leading with equity. Lily is American Canoe Association (ACA)’s first Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Coordinator. She will speak about several successful ACA events she developed and coordinated across four different US cities.
The initiative, called the Leadership Exploration and Development (LEAD) Initiative, was designed to train, educate, and empower people of color to develop as paddlesports leaders. In turn, these leaders help others to overcome barriers and participate in sports they enjoy. These goals were achieved through a 4-day immersive course and ongoing mentorship. The four programs happened across the country in the summer of ’22 alongside ACA’s partners, Hudson River Riders/Yonkers Paddling and Rowing Club in New York, REI Co-Op in Washington D.C. and Los Angeles, California, and Iowa Rivers Revival in Des Moines, Iowa.
Lily’s work helps organizations to think about how to create a more equitable space for people to get out on the water and participate in paddlesports.
All members are invited! If you would like WO to become more inclusive, diverse and enjoyable to all women, this talk is for you.
