  Well, as we feared, the US Government has shut down, throwing a curveball into our plans to visit Shenandoah National Park later this month. Therefore, the exact location of this hike will be updated on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2025, (via this website and an email to those registered). 

  If Shenandoah is re-opened, then we will hike a six-mile loop with 800 feet of elevation change that begins and ends at Elkwallow Wayside Picnic area. 

  If Shenandoah is still closed as of noon, Oct 18th, then we will change our plans to hike a 4-mile loop with 570 feet of elevation change at Sky Meadows State Park, which is just a few miles north of the Shenandoah Front Royal entrance.  

  Entry/Parking Fees:

  Shenandoah NP - $30/vehicle

  Sky Meadows SP - $10/vehicle

  We have deliberately chosen two options geographically near each other for the convenience of our members who live nearby or are willing to travel to the eastern Virginia mountains. 

  Both parks have bathrooms, plenty of parking, and picnic areas, so bring a picnic lunch to enjoy after our hike. Both loops were chosen for their views of the autumn leaves.

  We understand if one hike appeals more than the other, that you may cancel once the final location has been announced. We'll send an email to all those registered on Oct. 18th with updated information.  Feel free to register for this hike in the meantime.

  Registration closes on Monday, October 20.

  Note: We are aware that park trails may indicate they are open during the shutdown, but the bathrooms will either be closed or not cleaned, and there will not be garbage pickup. In the past, this has made the parks very unpleasant to visit during shutdowns, so we will avoid Shenandoah if the government is still closed.  In fact, Skyline Drive is gated shut as of Oct. 1.

  This activity is open to members and non-members of Women Outdoors. Non-members are welcome to attend two WO events as guests. On your third event, we'll ask you to join the Mid-Atlantic Region of Women Outdoors. You can also join right now by clicking on this Join Us link.

  Floating Idaho's Main Salmon River

  with Randi Quackenbush

  Join me on a presentation about my 7 day trip floating 80 miles down Idaho's Main Salmon River.

  

  In August 2025, Randi joined a group of 15 others in 6 rafts to float the Main Fork of Idaho's storied Salmon River, through the largest wilderness area in the lower 48. On the trip she got to visit the historic homestead of Buckskin Bill, a character she had been fascinated with since she read a book about him when she was 21.

  Topics covered: history of the Salmon River, river life, sites seen and visited, and more! 

  Presenter Bio:  Randi Quackenbush is a Women Outdoor's Board Member. She loves hiking, backpacking, paddling, skiing, and camping in all seasons, and she travels to the mountains at every opportunity. She lives in Trumansburg, NY with her husband and dog Luna.

  2026 National Cross-Country Ski Weekend in Craftsbury, Vermont

  Registration by lottery. 

  Anytime between Dec 1 and Dec 15, you can sign up for the event by adding your name to the event "waitlist." It doesn't matter when you sign up as long as it's before the deadline on Dec 15th.

  Shortly after December 15th, we will pull names via lottery. If your name is selected you will be notified, and payment will secure your spot. All others will be placed on the waitlist as per the lottery outcome. As spaces open up, you will be notified.

  Lodging, Meals, and Skiing

  Dates: Friday, February 27 - Sunday March 1, 2026

  Location: Craftsbury Outdoor Center in the heart of Vermont’s unspoiled Northeast Kingdom 

  Fee: 2 nights and 3 days, double occupancy with 2 twin beds ($235) or single ($290).

  This amazing weekend features 3 days and 2 nights of cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating and socializing. Women Outdoors members from all regions are encouraged and welcome to attend this event.

  Includes accommodations, all meals (from Friday dinner to Sunday lunch), and cross-country touring tickets.

  The restroom and showers are shared on each floor. Bedding and towels are provided. 

  Meals include both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. The variety and fresh local ingredients are just fabulous. Gluten-free and other specialties are available with advance notice.

  FAQs:

  Q: I am entering the lottery with my friend/partner/spouse/etc. How does this work?

  A: We will put your names (together) into the lottery ,TWICE, to

  provide you with equal probability. 

  Please note for those attending with a partner: We can count both of

  your names as one, and put you into the lottery twice.

  Q: I only want to come if I can have a single room. What if the only

  opening is a double?

  A: We will fill the single versus double rooms as they are selected

  by the lottery process. If there are no single rooms available when

  you are picked then you will be placed on the waiting list for a

  single.

  Q: I am fine with being in a double. Do I have to pre-select a

  roommate?

  A: No, we will assign you a roommate.

  Q: How quickly does the waitlist open up?

  A: It depends on when people cancel. Sometimes it is right before a

  refund deadline. Often there are cancellations at the last minute due

  to illness or life circumstances, so being flexible can work out in the

  end.

  Yay, camping!

  We're heading to Rocky Gap State Park in Allegany County, MD for a long weekend of outdoor adventure including hiking, biking, canoeing and kayaking. This will be the Mid-Atlantic Region's first trip to Rocky Gap, but we hear from reliable sources that we'll love it. 

  We have lots of options for outdoor fun! Rocky Gap offers a variety of multi-use trails from easy to challenging to please all of our hikers. Bring your bike or boat to explore a little further afield or afloat.

  Lake Habeeb, a 243-acre lake fed by Rocky Gap Run, offers many opportunities for fun on the water. Canoe, kayak and SUP boards are available to rent at the campground beach or at the day-use area. There are two public swimming beaches and fishing is also permitted with a Maryland fishing license.

  Doggies are welcome to come on this camping trip.

  Important: Rocky Gap State Park is very popular! If you're thinking of coming on this camping trip, you'll want to make your camping reservations as soon as possible. (See instructions below for the three-step process for registering for this camping trip.)

  The camping cost is $21.50/night (non-electric) or $27.50/night (electric) plus a $6.25 reservation fee.

  If camping isn't quite your thing but you'd still like to hang out with your WO Mid-Atlantic friends, consider making a reservation at the Comfort Inn and Suites, 1216 National Highway, LaVale, MD 21502, 301-729-6400. 

  To make things easier, everyone is responsible for bringing her own food for the weekend, but we'll designate one of our campsites as a place where we can all gather together in the evenings for dinner and a campfire.

  We have scheduled this camping trip for three nights (Thursday - Sunday, May 28-31), but if you can only join us for one or two nights, please do!

  Please do not bring firewood from home because of the potential threat of emerald ash borer and/or other invasive beetle species. Firewood can be purchased locally.

  Alcoholic beverages are not allowed in the campgrounds at Rocky Gap State Park.
  

  It's a three-step process to register for this camping trip:
  

  1) Register with Women Outdoors first by clicking on the registration button on the left. As soon as you complete your Women Outdoors registration, you will receive an automatic email with the exact location where the trip leaders and others will be camping.

  2) Reserve your campsite at Rocky Gap State Park through Maryland State Park Reservations or 888-432-2267.

  3) Once you have a campsite reserved, please send an email to BOTH MidAtlantic@womenoutdoors.org AND Becky@womenoutdoors.org to let us know which site you have.
  

  This overnight event is for Women Outdoors members only. If you would like to come on the camping trip and are not yet a member, please click on this Join Us link to become a member of Women Outdoors.

  Everyone must agree to the Women Outdoors Assumption of Risk statement during the registration process.

  Bring:

  • Tent, RV or camper van and all necessary camping gear
  • Any cooking supplies you'll need including camp stove and fuel

  • Sunscreen/insect repellent
  • Outdoor gear such as hiking boots/poles, bike, kayak or canoe and PFD (required for boating), binoculars
  • Matches, fire starter. Bringing firewood from home is prohibited. Firewood must be purchased locally.

  The automatic confirmation email will contain just a few details for this camping trip including the name of the loop and the campsites where the trip leaders will be camping. We will send out a follow-up email to everyone who has registered as we get closer to the trip.
